Wayne G.

Survivor

It had been very hot for days and one day my husband, Wayne said he was tired and felt cold. He rested for awhile and then I took him to the mobile clinic at 2 pm. Wayne is an active, healthy 72-year-old man. The clinic checked him out and all was fine – no fever, blood pressure fine. When we got home from clinic he laid down. At 7 pm he went outside to water flowers.

When he came in he was very shaky and had extreme difficulty getting up the 2 steps into our living room. Once he was in living room, he fell. He was conscious and hot to the touch. I put a cold cloth on his head and called an ambulance. The EMT took his temperature and it was 104! He was taken to hospital and the ER doctor knew he had an infection of some kind because of the fever. The doctor ordered blood cultures, a CT on his head and Wayne was immediately put on intravenous antibiotics. The next day the blood culture s were back and showed that he had Strep A blood infection. (Sepsis and Streptococcus Group A) He was in hospital for a week and when he was released he was on intravenous antibiotics for another 2 weeks. There were days that were touch and go and it was very scary. Wayne had excellent ER doctor and then great nurses and thank heavens he survived this ordeal.
